Prefects

Prefect Criteria

Prefects are chosen from the Year 10 pupils.  The selection process is usually finalised and announced to the students a couple of weeks before Easter of Year 10.  When selecting pupils to be prefects, there are two tiers of prefect:

House Prefect

School Prefect

School Prefect is the more senior role.  Pupils who are awarded House Prefect status will be set targets for becoming a school prefect.  Similarly, pupils who are not awarded prefect status, but did write a letter of application, will be set targets to become a House Prefect.  These targets are usually reviewed in six to eight weeks’ time, from when they are set.

In order to be awarded prefect status, pupils must achieve a minimum set of standards.  These are outlined below.

Attendance – Pupils must have achieved over 96% attendance in Year 10.  (Only in exceptional circumstances, where the school has been given an official medical diagnosis from a GP or a consultant will a lower attendance rate be considered.  In these cases attendance in Years 9, 8 & 7 will be considered).

Punctuality – Pupils must be recorded in their register as being on time to registration periods and lessons every day.  Pupils with more than five lates in Year 10 are a risk of missing out on prefect status.

T

Behaviour – Pupils must have demonstrated excellent behaviour around the school and in lessons throughout Year 10.  This will often be judged by the pupil’s interim report grades and school record, as well as any detentions given by staff

Effort – Balcarras expects all pupils to have excellent effort in all lessons and homework tasks.  Where a pupil has achieved a low effort grade for any subject in Year 10 interims, this may result in prefect status not being awarded in the first round of selection.

Overall Demeanour- Balcarras prefects are expected to be positive, enthusiastic and good role models for the younger pupils.  Pupils must have displayed these positive qualities around school and in lessons throughout Year 10.

Pupils must have had excellent uniform throughout Year 10 (there should be no occasions where rolling the skirt, trainers, make-up, earrings or any other uniform concerns have had to be dealt with).  Pupils should not need reminding about the no-phone policy during Year 10.

For any pupil wishing to apply for prefect status, they must write a letter of application to their Head of House in the Spring Term.  Pupils will be told in House Assemblies when the application process opens.
