Auschwitz 80th anniversary
Balcarras pupils mark the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust.
Monday marks Holocaust Memorial Day and the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp complex at the end of World War 2. Historians estimate that around 1,1 million people perished in Auschwitz during the less than 5 years of its existence. The majority, around 1 million people, were Jews.
For Personal Development all pupils watched a video explaining the significance of this event.
The history department are running a competition. This is in line with this year's Holocaust Educational Trust theme, "Light through Dark", they will create a display to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. Students can to contribute creative work exploring this theme. Poems, artwork, and other creative outcomes are all welcome and will form part of our display concept.
