Geographers win the debate

Year 13 Geographers took part in, and won a debate between schools in Cheltenham, as part of the Cheltenham Education Partnership.

On a Tuesday afternoon, Charlie, Maisie, Lydia and I drove to Bourneside to compete in a debate aimed at A- Level geography students. We were up against against Cheltenham Ladies College and were there to argue for the fuel allowance to be extended for this winter. Our debate was the first up, which was nerve racking, but we stuck to our argument that fuel was a basic human right, which is desperately needed for elderly people to survive adequately, or they would put further stress of government services like the NHS. Cheltenham Ladies college were a tough team to debate against, they had a strong argument that was well set out, as well as 1 team for reading the debate and a separate team for asking questions after. We also answered tough questions proposed by the floor to end our debate, with a special mention to Lydia who carried our side in this section. After the questions finished it was time for the floor to vote with a raise of hands, which to our delight went our way by the majority (we were especially pleased to beat a private school too). After we won our debate, we sat down and listened to Bourneside, Dean Close, Cheltenham College and Pittville debate on topics such as green energy and fuel nationalisation, which we all found very interesting as geography students.
